SICILIAN ARTISTS

I was totally concentrated on my mobile phone checking my Instagram while sipping a coffee at the Caffè Baby Luna when I was told that the young man sitting in front of me was drawing my portrait. Astonished, I looked at what he was doing and sure enough there it was, Davide Bica's masterpiece.


Here is Davide with Sonia, who is also a talented artist, she graduated from Art School. 



The coppola, the glasses and the mobile...that's me! 


Last but not least, here is a Nutella Crepe made by Sonia.  Isn't it to swoon for?

SFINCI...or as we say in Sicily, SPINCI

Sfinci are a kind of doughnuts made of flour, potatoes, milk, marsala and anice seeds. After cooking they are dipped in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.

During the holidays they  can be found everywhere ..... in cafès, pastry shops, delis etc. but nothing beats the taste of homemade Sfinci.

Here is how I made them:

Mix 300 grams of strong flour with 100g cold mashed potatoes, add 8 g of fresh yeast dissolved in 250 ml warm milk, then add 1 tablespoon Marsala wine and 1 tablespoon anice seeds. You should have a relatively soft dough.  

Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour. Heat olive oil, when it's quite hot dip your hands in cold water then take a bit of the dough, make a hole in it with your fingers and drop in the hot oil. Cook for about 1 minute on each side, until golden, then place on wax paper to drain off the oil.  Dip in the sugar and cinnamon mixture and .... BUON APPETITO! I warn you it's impossible to stop eating them:)

A GIFT FROM ROME

What a surprise!  The mailman rang the bell and said there was a package for me.  It was from my longtime good friend Yasuko in Rome.  She sent me a Christmas present ... a soft, warm winter jacket, and guess what color?:)  Yasuko  knows my favorite color is red so when she saw it she knew it was for me!  It's the perfect size too!






When it's really windy here...which is practically every day...I can put the hood on.
